Anthony Rotich and Risper Kimaiyo declared the 2012 Conference USA individual titles on Monday morning.

“I am happy for Anthony (Rotich) and Risper (Kimaiyo) and what they have accomplished for our program today,” said head coach Paul Ereng. “This was Anthony’s first Conference USA title and judging by today’s performance, he will be one the top distance runners in the NCAA.”

Rotich led the men’s team to a second place finish as he dominated the course crossing the finish line first with a time of 23:32.2 in the 8K race. The Kenyan native was also named the freshman of the meet for his performance at the C-USA Championship. This was the freshman’s fourth victory of his 2012 campaign.

“For Anthony the sky is the limit,” said Ereng. “The quartet of Elkana (Rotich), Elphas (Maiyo), Juan (Blanco) and Ramon (Garcia) competed well, resulting in the teams second place finish.”

Senior Elkana Rotich earned first team honors finishing fifth overall with a time of 24:18.9. Freshman Elphas Maiyo also was received first team recognition with a sixth place finish clocking in a time of 24:19.0.

El Paso native, Juan Blanco was named to the third team as he crossed the finish line with a time of 25:27.8. The fifth Miner to finish the race was Ramon Garcia with a personal-best of 25:50.8.

On the women’s side, Kimaiyo had a stellar performance recording a personal-best of 16:42.8 in the 5K run. The three-time All-American earned her third C-USA cross country crown and was named the outstanding senior of the meet.

“Risper has in the last four year’s won three of the Conference titles,” said Ereng. “With two more races left the season, she seems to be in a position to stamp her name in the UTEP recordbook as one of the best distance runners.”

Senior Karina Garcia concluded the race with a time of 18:36.1. El Paso native, Laura Delgado posted a personal-best of 18:52.8 in the women’s race.
