Miners Capture Lori Fitzgerald Title over NMSU
The UTEP cross country men’s and women’s squads recorded perfect scores to dominate the dual meet between the Miners and the Aggies on Thursday afternoon at the 25th annual Lori Fitzgerald Invitational at the Santa Teresa Country Club.
Sophomore Risper Kimaiyo was, for the 11th consecutive time, the top finisher for the women’s team crossing the finish line at 16:22. Kathya Garcia took the silver clocking in at 16:55 while Glady Chumba took the final spot in the medal stand with a time of 17:14.
Karina Garcia and Gladys Chepsat rounded up the top five with times of 17:23 and 17:37, respectively, to give the women a team score of 15 for the second consecutive year at the meet.
While an unattached runner took the men’s individual title, Justice Chirchir was the top finisher on the scoreboard with a time of 20:14 with Elkana Rotich following at 20:45 for second. Last year’s champion Robert Menjo was third coming in at 21:03 with Solomon Gardea in fourth posting a time of 21:20. Newcomer Abel Koskey completed the men’s 6.6K at 21.43.
The Miners will return to action on Oct. 2 when they travel to South Bend, Ind., for the Notre Dame Invitational.
