Mike Price Media Luncheon Quotes

(Analysis of Saturday’s 19-10 win at NM State) “We’re really excited about the victory. It was a tremendous game. It was a hard hitting, physical game. I don’t think anyone left early to beat the traffic. We kept everyone in their seats and it was really a lot of fun. We had some positions on the team that played really well. We were very physical on the offensive line. We made some big blocks down the field with our receivers. We protected very well for Jay Hall. He might have been sacked once. We protected very well with the tight ends, running backs and offensive line. We got the running game going and improved our rushing attack.

“We did have some pre-snap penalties that we haven’t had before and we have to continue to work on better ball security. Our ball security was very poor. On defense we did a great job. We had six sacks, seven tackles for losses and 21 quarterback pressures. We did a lot of different things and really put the pressure on their quarterback. I had a chance to talk to him after the game and he was one tired kid. They had 16 net yards rushing. On defense we were really physical. I wish I could bottle that enthusiasm and type of intensity every week. Boy, they played really hard.

“The negatives on defense … we played soft on the two-minute drill before the half. We might have lost some composure and we gave that touchdown to them too easily. But boy, we had some great goal line stands. And on third down, they had no real explosive plays.

“There were three things we wanted to accomplish on special teams, and we did all of them. Number one, we wanted to stop #1 [Jonte Green], and we did. And then we wanted to have our return game do a good job, and I thought Anthony McGhee did a wonderful job returning punts. Vernon Frazier is doing a great job on kickoff returns, and Steve Valdez is doing a tremendous job kicking off. And the third thing was we wanted to execute a fake, and obviously that was the play of the game and really changed our momentum. They had the momentum at halftime, no question about it.”

(On the status of injured players Nick Lamaison, Travaun Nixon and Germard Reed) “They’re all getting better. Our injuries are getting better. I haven’t seen them today. I saw them yesterday. We may have some of them back this week.”

(On the quarterback situation heading into the USF game) “We’re not eliminating anybody at the quarterback position for this game. We have to see how the injuries pan out this week. We’re just trying to find out what they run on offense and defense.”

(On getting Cliff Tucker more involved in the offense) “We haven’t been using Cliff a lot. We’re going to though. He just didn’t get the opportunity against NM State. Goal line passing was not one of the things I was going to emphasize against this team. We didn’t have a whole bunch of opportunities to do that anyway. We had trouble getting into the red zone.”

(On USF)
“They’re ranked in the top 20 in just about every category. They’re really good. They have a really good quarterback, a couple of good runners, real good receivers, and they run the no huddle offense. It’s a great opportunity for our players. That’s why they came here and this is the best team South Florida has ever had, so we’ll get them at their best. Hopefully we’ll get some guys back from injuries and be able to fill up the plane.”

(On what the Miners are hoping to get out of this week) “We want to get better fundamentally in everything that we’re doing. We have to handle the ball better. I don’t want to see fumbles or interceptions. We just want to improve and get one game better (for conference play). Let’s just concentrate on what we’re doing.”

(On the benefits of playing BCS opponents) “I think it helps in recruiting when you play these teams. I’d like to play more Texas schools, and so would Bob [Stull] and Dr. Natalicio. Those teams are hard to schedule. It’s OK for us to go play Big East and SEC schools, but I’d rather play Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech or TCU first.”

(On the humidity in Tampa)
“I think it’s a concern. It was humid last week and the week before. They were talking on TV about how humid it was. I don’t know if the humidity will be as difficult to handle as their fast offensive pace. We’ll have to substitute liberally.”

(On what USF does)
“They run the shotgun, their quarterback runs with it, and they run bootlegs and quick throws. Last year they ran more two-back and I-formation, but their offense is different from last year. Their defensive coordinator is Mark Snyder, who was the head coach at Marshall. I like both Skip [Holtz] and Mark Snyder. Snyder isn’t as good of a golfer as Skip, and his putting is probably the weakness in their defense.”
