McDermott Named Starting Quarterback for SMU, UTEP's Next Opponent
UTEP could face two quarterbacks Saturday at Gerald Ford Stadium in Dallas. SMU Head Coach June Jones announced Tuesday that senior J.J. McDermott will start at quarterback against UTEP on Saturday.
Jones said junior Kyle Padron will play but that McDermott, a transfer from New Mexico State, will get the start after evaulating both quarterbacks during the Texas A&M loss Sunday. McDermott left NMSU after Hal Mumme was let go from his position three years ago.
Padron threw two interceptions in SMU's first two possessions, then was pulled for McDermott, who ended up throwing for 254 yards and a touchdown.
"He was playing pretty well," Jones said of McDermott. "I thought I was going to put Kyle [Padron] back in the game, but I wanted him to gather himself, and it looked like it was the right decision."
Saturday's game with UTEP starts at 5pm MST at Ford Stadium, televised on FSN.
