Mayfield's Holguin Staying Home, Signs with NMSU
New Mexico State women's basketball head coach Mark Trakh announced that Elena Holguin, a shooting guard from Mayfield High School in Las Cruces signed a National Letter of Intent this week to play basketball at NM State beginning in the fall of 2011.
A prolific shooting guard, Holguin was a key component of Mayfield's 2011 Class 5A state championship title in New Mexico this season. She averaged 26.3 points per game in the state tournament. The 5-8 guard also featured prominently in four consecutive district titles while her team compiled a 104-12 record under head coach George Maya.
"We are excited to sign Elena," said Trakh. "She really excelled on the state championship team and is a great local prospect for us. Her signing is a big step in the right direction to help us recruit the best local talent as well as accomplished athletes from across the state and borderland region."
As Mayfield's top 3-point shooter, Holguin averaged 16.0 points per game. She also was second on her team in rebounds and assists.
Holguin earned recognition on the 2010-11 New Mexico All-State First Team and took home state tournament Most Valuable Player honors as a senior. Additionally, she earned All-District accolades on three occasions including a District Player of the Year honor. Holguin was also a three-time All-Tournament selection and named a North/South All-Star in New Mexico.
