Mayfield was 3-3 heading into district play when they began an improbable run to winning their eight State Championship last season and Thursday they begin their title defense. Gone are most of last season starters including running back Brandon Bettancourt who is now playing football at New Mexico State. In fact the offense only returns three starters. Quarterback Axten Franzoy returns for his senior season and will be flanked by offensive leader, running back Ricky Milks. Meanwhile, the defense only returns four starters. Despite all that, Head Coach Michael Bradley may have all the pieces to make it back to the title game.

"It's tough defending a title. Success is always hard to repeat. We don't have a lot of people coming back," said Bradley. "We are excited about this group. I expect them to be there at the end. I don't know if we'll be in it or not but we are definitely going to be striving for it."

The Trojans will host Chapin High School for their season opener Thursday, August 25 at the Field of Dreams in Las Cruces.
