Lopez, Duran Win Junior Match Play Championship

Sports

POSTED: Thursday, July 15, 2010 - 5:47pm

UPDATED: Thursday, July 15, 2010 - 10:39pm

Thursday, July 15:  Matthew Lopez and Laurencia Duran can call themselves Junior Match Play Champions.  Lopez defeated 13-year old Tanner Gore 1-up at Coronado Country Club, to win his first big title in El Paso.  Duran defeated Michelle Provenghi (both of Coronado High School) 5&4 to win the girls championship.

Lopez said he had hoped to challenge for the title since the tournament began. "I thought I could be a contender. When I saw the bracket I had to play, I had to play the Number 1 seed. I just had to play good, play smart, and just give myself a chance to win."
