Local Horse in Sunland Derby

This season's Sunland Derby may not have the most horses to ever run, but many argue it could be the deepest with horses coming from from California, Florida, and everywhere in between. But it could be a local horse to take home the $800,000 prize for first place and a spot in the Kentucky Derby.

"Isn't He Clever" was the winner of the $150,000 Borderland Derby earlier this season and will be a 4-1 odds for Sunday's race. The horse's trainer, Henry Dominguez, is a veteran of local horse racing and holds the top spot in the Sunland Park trainer standings. Dominguez feels his horse has a good chance of winning.

"The Borderland Derby prepped us right for this race. It's a good month before this race which everybody prefers and I believe it sets us up perfect for this race," said Dominguez.

The current odds favorite is "Castaway", a Bob Baffert horse who is a 2-1 favorite and will be running the rail. But Sunland Park Director of Media Eric Alwan says "Isn't He Clever" could easily be an upset pick.

"I would think in "Isn't He Clever's" strategy, he's become more of a patient racehorse in his last couple of races so he might be more of a stalking roll," said Alwan.

Racing begins Sunday at 12:45 with the Sunland Derby call to post at 5:45 pm.
