Latvian trio living out dreams

Sports

POSTED: Saturday, March 17, 2012 - 5:50pm

UPDATED: Sunday, March 18, 2012 - 2:59pm

Going the distance to follow their dreams is exactly what Baiba Eglite, Anete Steinberga, and Kritine Vitola have done leaving family and friends behind in Latvia to play at UTEP.

"It feels pretty good when I left home this was one of my dreams to play in the NCAA tournement at the same time I wish my family could be here and experience with me I am happy I can be here some of my dreams are coming through here" said Eglite.

"I mean it feels great what I feel like El Paso is my second home it feels great to be here" added Vitola.

The girls were recruited by Polish assistant Ewa Laskowska which made coming to El Paso an easy transition.

"Coach Adams is a really good person and thats something we always sell they are coming to a place that they know they will be well taken care of they will have a good experience a good playing experience and good academic experience and great community," said Laskowska. "This is a basketball town."

Chemistry was developed not only through language but also their game on the court.

"We knew each others game so we can feel each other more on the court" said Junior forward Steinberga.

Vitola, who faced Anete in high schoo, agreed.

"It feels great. They help me a lot in the beginning and I think on the court when me and Anete are on the court we just feel each other so it's like Latvian game a little but it feels great actually."

As the girls embark on their journey to the NCAA Tournament, this will be an experience they will never forget.

"We have got so far. It has been an interesting experience to come from home and get the championship and other titles," said Steinberga.

UTEP will look to add an NCAA Championship beginning with their first round game againts Penn St. on Sunday in Baton Rouge, LA.
