Lamaison Named UTEP Starting Quarterback

Sports

POSTED: Tuesday, August 16, 2011 - 6:17pm

UPDATED: Tuesday, August 16, 2011 - 8:23pm

It was simple.  "Nick's the guy" said Mike Price, and just like that, Junior College transfer Nick Lamaison was named UTEP's starting quarterback.  Just a Junior, Lamaison has never played a down of Division 1 college football, yet excelled at Mt. SAC in Walnut, California.

Price added, "He throws a crisp ball, an accurate ball, he takes care of the football, he makes good decisions. Those are the main reasons Nick is the guy." A happy Nick Lamaison said after practice, "I am really happy with the decision, I put a lot of hard work in, and it's paid off. I am really happy and think it will be good for this team."

Lamaison earned All-California and All-American honors after leading Mt. San Antonio College to the number one ranking in the JC Athletic Bureau/California Community College Football Coaches Association (CCCFCA) in 2010 ... named the Offensive Player of the Year for both the All-California and All-American teams ... the Mounties finished 13-0 and defeated previously unbeaten City College of San Francisco, 34-7, to capture their second straight state and national championship ... he completed 23 of 33 passes for 233 yards to earn MVP honors in the state title game ... completed 300 of 499 passes (60.1 percent) for 3,993 yards with 30 touchdowns and 12 interceptions as a sophomore ... averaged 307.2 yards passing per game ... threw for a season-high 422 yards at College of the Desert on Sept. 18 ... also played at Mt. SAC as a freshman during the 2008 season, completing 246-of-385 passes (63.9 percent) for 3,479 yards with 36 TDs and eight picks ... squad was 13-1 that year ... his freshman honors included first team All-American by JC Athletic Bureau and California Community College Region 3 Offensive Player of the Year ... signed with Tennessee following his freshman year at Mt. SAC before returning to the Mounties ... teammate of current Miners Mike Edwards and James Martin at Mt. SAC ... played prep ball at South Hills (Calif.) High School, throwing for 2,411 yards and 17 scores as a senior ... first-team All- CIF and the All-League MVP in 2007 ... three-year letterwinner.
