The New Mexico State women's basketball team dropped its opening game of the Hotel Encanto Thanksgiving Classic to North Dakota 63-46 at the Pan American Center Saturday afternoon.

The visiting Fighting Sioux shot 50 percent from the field and won the rebounding battle to deal NM State its fourth straight defeat at home. NM State led 11-10 with just over 12 minutes left in the first half. But shortly after senior forward Tabytha Wampler went out of the game with two early fouls, UND used an 8-0 run to create a 10-point advantage at intermission, 29-19. The Aggies opened the second half on a 6-0 run to cut the lead to four, 29-25, at the 18:50 mark but UND answered with a 14-2 rally to grow its lead to double-digits again.

Freshman guard Hannah Womack led the Aggies with 13 points including 3-of-4 from long range. Wampler posted 11 points to go with four boards. Sophomore Jasmine Rutledge led NM State with eight rebounds and recorded six tallies.

NM State shot just 25.0 percent from the floor while North Dakota made 50.0 percent of its shots. The Aggies made 50 percent (5-10) of their 3-point attempts and held UND to just 8.3 percent (1-12). NM State also won the turnover battle with 18 miscues while forcing 22 turnovers. But the Fighting Sioux rebounding advantage of 43-26 helped turn the tide in the game. The Sioux women also outscored the Aggies 24-10 in the paint. UND's reserves registered 26 points while NM State's bench posted eight points.

After the loss, the Aggies drop to 1-4 on the season while North Dakota improves to 4-1 this year with the win.
UND scored first but Wampler drained a three to give NM State an early 3-2 lead inside two minutes. The Sioux women took the lead for the next several minutes but the Aggies used a 7-2 run aided by a Womack three to take an 11-10 lead with just under 13 minutes before halftime.

The visitors responded with an 8-0 run to lead 18-11. Led by guard Charnay Mothershed's six points in the final nine minutes, UND increased its lead to the largest margin of the half at the break, 29-19.

NM State shot only 28.0 percent (7-25) from the floor in the half while North Dakota shot 48.0 percent (12-25). UND held a 19-13 edge on the boards while the turnovers were even at 10. The Aggies made 3-of-5 from behind the arc while UND made just 1-of-7 from long range.

The Aggies rallied with six straight to open the second half to cut the UND lead to four, 29-25, with 18:50 remaining. But the Sioux women answered with a 14-2 over the next eight minutes to build a double-digit lead at 43-27 midway through the stanza. The Aggies would not inch any closer as UND maintained its cushion the rest of the way.

Charnay Mothershed led UND with 13 points, her sister Chanise added 10 as did Emily Evers. Forward Madi Buck led grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds for UND.

NM State concludes its five-game homestand as Hotel Encanto Thanksgiving against Southern Utah at noon on Sunday.
