Kimaiyo named Cross Country C-USA Scholar Athlete of the Year

Kimaiyo named Cross Country C-USA Scholar Athlete of the Year

Risper Kimaiyo was selected as the 2012-13 Cross Country Conference USA Scholar Athlete of the Year, which is determined by the league’s Faculty Athletics Representatives.

Scholar-Athletes were selected from C-USA’s full-time and affiliated institutions in 20 sports. The award is based on academic achievement (GPA), athletic achievement and service.

Kimaiyo was one of four student-athletes that were repeat winners; she previously won the recognition in 2010-11. The senior sports a 3.48 GPA and currently is pursuing a degree in nursing.

On thecourse, the runner dominated the competition claiming her four All-Americanhonor as she clocked in a personal best of 19:41.0 in the 6K at the NCAA Championships finishing fifth overall. Kimaiyo became the first woman in program to earn four straight cross country All-American honors. She didn’t stop there as she claimed her third straight crown at the NCAA Mountain Region Championships with a time of 20:10.8 in the 6K.

The senior also earned her third C-USA Championship title this season in the Orange and Blue clocking in a personal-best time of 16:42.8 in the 5K run. Kimaiyo concluded the season with six top three performances, including a second-place finish at the NCAA Pre-National meet.

The Kenyan native received several awards this season including: C-USA first team honoree, C-USA Athlete of the Year, C-USA Spirit of Service, C-USA Outstanding Senior of the Meet, NCAA Mountain Athlete of the Year, C-USA All-Academic and four C-USA Athlete of the Week honors.

Kimaiyo not only is a dedicated student-athlete, but she also makes an effort to give back to the community. She is an active volunteer that helped in Tots for Trots,Minerpalooza and 50/50 Raffle Ticket Sales.

The cross country team will kickoff the season on Sept. 7 in Albuquerque, N.M. at theLobo Invitational.
