Kimaiyo earns bid to NCAA Championships

Senior Risper Kimaiyo earned a bid to the NCAA Championship on Thursday as she finished 10th in the 10,000m at the 2013 NCAA West Preliminary Round.

Kimaiyo held a strong pace throughout the whole race and clocked in a time of 35:08.85. This is the All-Americans first appearance at the national meet in the women’s 10,000m. The last time the senior took the national stage was at the 2012 NCAA Cross Country Championships, where she crossed the finish line fifth.

Running a tremendous race in the Orange and Blue was sophomore Abiola Onakoya. The sprinter took the track in the men’s 400m first round and was one of the first runners to advance to the semifinals finishing second in the first heat with a time of 46.40. Onakoya finished ninth out of 47 competitors and was the top finisher in Conference USA.

Teammate A-Shawni Mitchell missed the semifinal round of the 400m after posting a fourth-place finish in the second heat of the night.

Senior Anthony Wright qualifies for the men’s 100m quarterfinals on Friday at 6:45 p.m. (CT). The sprinter registered a season-best time of 10.42 finishing fourth in the first heat of the night.

Senior Donovan Grant concludes his collegiate career at the NCAA West Preliminary Round finishing sixth in the second flight of the long jump. The jumper’s second leap of 7.22m (23-08.25) rated him 32nd out of a field of 47 competitors.

Teammate Mark Jackson posted a mark of 7.14m (23-05.25) in his third attempt. Jackson will take the runway again in the triple jump where he ranks fourth in the nation with a jump of 16.19m (53-01.50).

Senior Yolanda Suggs earns a spot in the women’s 100m finals posting a time of 11.50 in the fifth heat of the night. The sprinter finished fifth in her heat and 20th overall.
