All-American Risper Kimaiyo returned to the annual Drake Relays to earn her second crown on Thursday.

The senior was the first runner to cross the finish line in the 5,000m registering a time of 16:18.00.

“The first eight laps, I felt like I opened the gap,” said Kimaiyo. “But towards the end she (Victoria Voronko) started closing the gap and I just kept pushing and she then dropped.”

For the men’s team, Elphas Maiyo ran a tough race from start to end. The sophomore was leading most of the race until the final two laps, where all the competitors dashed to the finish line. The distance runner finished in 11th place posting a personal best of 14:25.76 in the 5,000m.

Looking Ahead
The Miners will resume competition tomorrow in Des Moines, Iowa starting with the women’s 100m hurdles at 9:32 a.m. (CDT).

Richard Olsson will kick off the field events for UTEP in the men’s javelin throw scheduled for 10:45 a.m.

Bobcat Classic
A group of Miners will travel to San Marcos, Texas to partake in the Bobcat Classic.

Krystal Fleming will be the only Miner to take the field tomorrow representing the Orange and Blue in the hammer throw at approximately 12 p.m. (CDT).
