New Mexico State men's basketball head coach Marvin Menzies has granted sophomore guard Christian Kabongo an official release.
"I am disappointed to lose Christian at this point in our season," Menzies said. "He is a tremendously talented player who has shown a lot of growth in his time here. However, I agree that a fresh start somewhere else may be the best thing for him right now. He has a very bright future, and I wish him nothing but the best."
Kabongo played in 11 games in 2011-12 and averaged 14.6 points and 3.4 rebounds per game.
"I am grateful for the chance to come to New Mexico State and getting to be an Aggie," Kabongo said. "I loved my time here and will always cheer for this team. But right now it is best to find a new opportunity and get a fresh start where I can continue working on being the player and person I want to be. For those I have disappointed I am sorry, and I hope all my teammates have a great season. I know they will."
At the midpoint of the season, over 30 Division I transfers have been announced across the country.
"Transferring is now becoming a very common avenue for players across the NCAA," Menzies said. "The incredible number of mid-season transfers around the country this year is an indication of that. I feel great about the remaining players in the program and their abilities to continue towards our goals."
The Aggies (9-5) travel west for their final non-conference tune-up at Cal State Bakersfield, Monday, Jan. 2 at 8 p.m. in Bakersfield, Calif.
