Jason Garrett Named New Head Coach of the Dallas Cowboys

For days, even weeks, all signs pointed to Garrett as the leading candidate to become the eighth full-time head coach in Cowboys history. Thursday, team owner/general manager Jerry Jones made it official.

Garrett now permanently replaces Wade Phillips, whom Jones fired Nov. 8 after a disastrous 1-7 start to the 2010 season. The Cowboys went 5-3 in Garrett's eight-game tenure as interim coach, his three losses coming by a total of seven total points, to finish 6-10.

Both were all smiles at an introductory press conference at Cowboys Stadium, but both know there's also a lot of work ahead.

The Cowboys' 6-10 record was their worst since 2004. They tied for seventh in the NFL in points scored (394), but also allowed the most points in franchise history (436). And with a potential lockout looming, the organization must mull several roster decisions.

Jones never appeared to doubt Garrett as the team's long-term leader. He did interview two potential replacements over the last four days, Cowboys receivers coach Ray Sherman and Dolphins assistant head coach/secondary Todd Bowles, satisfying the NFL's Rooney Rule for minority candidates. But, Jones never met with Super Bowl-winning coaches like Bill Cowher or Jon Gruden, as previously speculated.
