Jareica Hughes Named 2nd Team All-Conference USA
Senior guard Jareica Hughes has garnered placement on the All-Conference USA second team as announced by the league office on Saturday.
Hughes becomes the first Miner and fifth player all-time in C-USA history to earn all-league recognition in all four years of competition, joining Sandora Irvin (2002-05), Chandi Jones (2001-04), Sara Nord (2001-04) and Jasmine Young (2006-09).
The 5-3 guard stormed onto the scene in 2007 as the C-USA Freshman of the Year (third team all league) before garnering back-to-back C-USA Player of the Year awards (first team each season).
She is one of only two players in the history of C-USA to have registered career totals of more than 1,500 points, 570 assists and 270 steals.
Hughes holds eight career records at UTEP. They are in the form of assists, free-throws made and attempted, minutes played, points, starts, steals and wins.
She was the top threat for the Miners once again in 2009-10. During the regular season, she filled up the stat sheet to the tune of 5.0 apg (1st team/3rd C-USA/45th nation), 11.9 ppg (1st team/13th C-USA) and 1.8 spg (1st team/11th C-USA).
She made 68 (1st team) of 104 (1st team) at the free-throw line. Hughes nailed 41 triples (2nd team), took care of the ball well with a +1.6 assist-to-turnover ratio (2nd team/7th C-USA), was accurate on her triples at 36.9 (3rd team/8th C-USA) and even got after it with 4.1 rpg (4th team).
Hughes and the Miners will be in action when they take on Rice in the opening-round of the 2010 Conference USA Championships (as hosted by the University of Tulsa) at 7:30 p.m. MT at the Donald W. Reynolds Center on Monday, March 8.
