Horse Racing Returns to Sunland Park Friday

Wednesday, December 8, 2010 - 9:46pm

After a long offseason, the horses will be running again this Friday at Sunland Park Racetrack to kick off the 2010-2011 season. Along with it, a $19million purse for the 77-day meet. The biggest chunk, an $800,000 payout for the Sunland Durby, a Kentucky Derby qualifyer.

The recent success can be most attributed to local horse Mine That Bird who won the 135th running of the Kentucky Derby as a 50-1 odds. A statue of the horse was housed for the past year at the Kentucky Derby Hall of Fame and then given to the owners, Mark Allen and Leonard Blach, who then presented it to Sunland Park Racetrack. The statue will be on display at the racetrack.
