Hipp Named WAC Hitter of the Week

Monday, February 21, 2011 - 3:04pm

Sophomore second baseman Parker Hipp has been named Verizon Wireless Western Athletic Conference Hitter of the Week, as announced by the league office, for the week of Feb. 14-20.

Hipp, a native of San Diego, Calif., helped the Aggies to a season-opening sweep over Houston Baptist as he was 6-for-11 at the dish with six RBI and five runs scored. On the weekend he posted two doubles, a triple and a home run to go along with a 1.182 slugging percentage. He also got on base with three walks and was hit by a pitch once, while striking out only three times for a .667 on-base percentage.

"He played very well for us this weekend, and he has the potential to continue improving his game both offensively and defensively and that could be a scary thing for opponents," head coach Rocky Ward said.
Defensively, Hipp tallied a perfect fielding percentage with five putouts and five assists, while getting in on two double plays. He opened his sophomore season going 2-for-3 at the plate with three RBI and two runs scored. He walked twice and tallied the Aggies first triple of the year as the Aggies won 9-6. Hipp had a 3-of-4 day in game two of the series with two more RBI and two more runs scored. In the series finale, he opened the game up when he started the Aggies' six-run eighth inning with a solo-shot over the right field wall leading his team to a 9-1 win.

Hipp and the rest of the Aggie baseball squad head north to Albuquerque to face in-state rival New Mexico, Tuesday, Feb. 22 at 3:05 p.m. (MT) at Isotopes Park.
