West tops East in Greater El Paso Football Showcase High School All-Star Game

Winning is not new to Don Brooks, but Saturday the former Coronado football coach got his first win as an All-Star head coach as the West took down the East 24-8 on a cold, windy day at the Sun Bowl.

The weather definitely played a factor as the top senior football players strapped on the pads for the last time as high schoolers. Points were at a premium in the first half with West holding a 6-0 at the break on a 19 yard rushing touchdown by Chapin QB Seth Gonzalez.

The West opened it up in the second half going up 17-0 in the 4th quarter after two rushing touchdowns by Chapin QB Seth Gonzalez and a 22 yard field goal by Andress kicker Brandon Bautista.

Montwood QB Jacob Aguilar led the East to their first and only scoring drive late in the 4th quarter on an 8-yard touchdown to teammate Ruben Portillo.

However, on the ensuing onside kick, Andress receiver Eddie Sinegal returned the try 60 yards on a spectacular return inside the East 9. Coronado's Bobby Chacon would cap the drive with a 1-yard TD plunge to put the game away for good.

"It was a total team effort all day long. Defense did phenomenal holding them for as long as we did. And on offense, we stepped up when we needed to. That's all a credit to our coaches who prepared us really well for this game," said Gonzalez.

"Most of the players, they were worried about the cold, ready to leave. It's more of a mental thing and it got the best of us," said East running back LeDerrick Wilson from El Dorado.

The West was able to win despite gaining only 131 total yards. East was only slightly better in yardage at 211.

Aguilar was named East MVP while Coronado lineman Eddy Lopez was West MVP.
