Sun Bowl to host trio of high school football games

High School Football

POSTED: Monday, October 14, 2013 - 10:43pm

UPDATED: Monday, October 14, 2013 - 10:45pm

Sun Bowl officials, UTEP, and EPISD came together to make the high school football regular season an exciting one for six high schools.  Andress, Austin, Bowie, El Paso, Jefferson, and Irvin get a chance to play their rivalry games in the Sun Bowl on Saturday, November 9 in a triple header starting at 10:00am.

It's the brainchild of new EPISD superintendent Juan Cabrera, who thought this would be a fantastic way to celebrate the city of El Paso's oldest rivalries.  Coaches agreed.

Irvin head coach Howard Wells told Newschannel 9, "Of course the kids can hardly wait for the last game, to go play it, because a lot of them have the dream of playing there all their life, and the new superintendent giving us that opportunity is really great."  Jefferson head coach Jim Clark was equally as excited.  "This game is going to be huge, we get to play Bowie who is a fantastic team, and you get that college atmosphere cause these kids don't get that opportunity all the time, and for them to get out there and fly around in the Sun Bowl is going to be huge, I am excited for them."

The schedule for Saturday, November 9:

10:00am: Andress vs Irvin

2:00pm: Bowie vs Jefferson

6:00pm: Austin vs El Paso
