Mayfield Defeats Manzano, Will Host Cleveland for State Championship Saturday

High School Football

POSTED: Friday, November 25, 2011 - 10:57pm

UPDATED: Saturday, November 26, 2011 - 7:42pm

The Mayfield Trojans earned the #2 seed in the 5A State Playoffs, and they took advantage of home field advantage, defeating #3 Manzano, 41-34 at the Field of Dreams.  Mayfield overcame deficits of 13-0 and 26-14, scoring 20 straight points in the third and fourth quarters to put the game away.

Mayfield will host #1 seed Cleveland for the 5A State Championship.  The State Championship will take place 1:00pm Saturday, December 3rd at the Field of Dreams in Las Cruces.

It was an emotional start and week for Mayfield Head Coach Michael Bradley, whose father, Jim Bradley, a Mayfield assistant, suffered a heart attack on Monday and was released from the hospital on Thursday, in time for Thanksgiving.  Recovering well, Jim did not stand on the sidelines, instead watched the game from the press box.

"I missed him, I missed him being out there. I think he's pretty happy though. It was huge to get the win, and he had a lot to do with this. Whether he's here or not, these guys play for coach Bradley", said his son, Michael, the Mayfield Head Coach.  Senior Running Back Ricky Milks was excited about the possibility of winning their second straight state championship.  "You got to go all four quarters, play mayfield football, and you can't give up, never quit. From the scout team, everyone, got to give it all you have, and bring another state championship to the south and be prepared for anything."

Man, I am so proud of of these guys...they ALWAYS give it their all and don't let being behind stop them from going for their best and a win! Go Trojans! I'm so proud of you guys!

Sincerely,
Beth Harrelson
