It took two decades but the Cougars will finally have a stadium to call their own. Franklin High School broke ground Thursday at a ceremony marking the start of construction on their $1.6M stadium upgrade.

The money comes as part of a 2007 EPISD bond reallocation specifically designed to upgrade athletic facilities at both Franklin and Jefferson High School. The upgrade will increase seating to 6,000, add a press box, public address system, concessions, and a new video scoreboard.

Head Coach Daren Walker, who began his head coaching career at Chapin who also is without their own football stadium, is looking forward to coaching in his own home field in his 14-year career.

"Home field advantage, you know, to be able to walk out of the home locker room and be able to play a game, that's something I have never experienced as a coach so I am excited for the opportunity," Walker said.

Adrian Stresow, EPISD Director of Planning, Engineering and Construction, said construction on the grandstand should begin within 30 days and the project is scheduled to be finished by September 1, in time for the start of the football season this fall.
