Las Cruces, N.M. -- Former NM State defensive back Jeremy Harris was selected by the Jacksonville Jaguars as the No. 208 overall pick in the seventh round of the 2013 NFL Draft, Saturday afternoon. Harris becomes the third NM State football player in as many years to be drafted by an NFL team.

“This is a true blessing to be drafted by Jacksonville,” Harris said. “This just proves that hard work pays off in the end. To be going to Jacksonville and play for my former coach in college is the perfect situation for me. I couldn’t ask for anything more.”

“I’m extremely happy for Jeremy,” NM State defensive coordinator David Elson said. “I thought Coach Mike Rutenberg did a great job of keeping Jeremy on track during his two years with us both on the field and in the classroom. Jeremy really improved over this past season and this is well deserved.”

“We are really excited for Jeremy,” NM State Head Coach Doug Martin said. “To play for Coach Walker and Coach Rutenberg will be a great way to start his NFL career.”

Harris, a native of Los Angeles, Calif., tallied 56 tackles in 2013, while leading the team with 10 pass break-ups, ranking him tied for sixth in the WAC and 68th in the nation. He recorded five games with at least six tackles, ranking him sixth on the team in total tackles. Harris was a first team All-WAC selection in 2012.
