Hall Named Conference USA Co Offensive Player of the Week
Tess Hall has been named the Conference USA Women’s Soccer Co-Offensive Player of the Week after helping UTEP capture the Border Shootout Championship, the league office announced Monday afternoon.
Hall piled up seven points (three goals & an assist) to set the tone for the Miners’ offense. Two of the tallies were off set pieces, finished in spectacular fashion. The Miners defeated a pair of quality foes in the form of 2011 Southland Conference Champions Texas State (3-1, Aug. 22) & 2011 Patriot League Champion Army (3-2, Aug. 26). Both of those opponents participated in the NCAA Tournament last year.
“We are very proud of Tess,” UTEP head coach Kevin Cross said. “That is an amazing honor but well deserved after scoring three goals versus two reigning conference champions this weekend.”
Hall scored twice against the Bobcats. Her first goal came after a scramble in the box which she put away to give UTEP a 1-0 lead. She then gave the home side some much-needed breathing room off a free kick. Hall brilliantly bent the ball over the wall, sailing it into upper 90's country.
The Miners fell behind 1-0 vs. Army but Hall changed the contest with her play after the tally. She provided the equalizer with a rocket from 35 yards out. She then helped set up the go-ahead tally with a nice pass to Jade Babcock, who fed it to Azia Nicholson for the goal. The effort by Hall allowed UTEP to score twice in a span of just under 10 minutes.
UTEP will return to action when it hits the road to partake in a tournament hosted by UC Riverside. The Miners will face Southern Utah at 5 p.m. MT Friday before challenging the hosts at 2 p.m. MT Sunday.
