Golden Knights too Much for UTEP on Senior Night

Sports
Thursday, November 25, 2010 - 12:11am

The UTEP volleyball team fell to UCF, 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 25-19) to spoil senior day for El Paso natives, Jennifer Nolasco and Kyla Muela, in what was the final home match of the 2010 season.

The Miners fall to 12-20 and 4-15 in C-USA play while UCF improves to 15-16 and 8-11 in league action.

The two teams will duel for the final time in 2010 on Saturday in Orlando, Fla. With the elimination of the C-USA Championship tournament, Tulsa (29-2, 19-0) secured the regular season title last Friday and earned the automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.

Nolasco, who was honored prior to the match, recorded 11 digs for the match. The senior out of Horizon High School, laced an ace to open the match. Muela, who was also honored contributed three kills and a solo block.

UTEP’s Stephanie Figueroa led the team in digs with 12 and Melissa Toth led the Miners in kills with eight.

UCF’s Angelica Crump hammered a match-best 16 kills and the Knights’ Kirstin Fisher also produced double figures in kills with 12.

The Miners hit .210 for the match including a .360 (12-3-25) clip in the second set. The Knights, who hit .288 for the match, held the Miners to under .200 in the first and third frames.

UTEP belted out to an 8-3 lead in the first frame but the Knights chipped away at the lead and knotted the match at 20-20 off an attack error by UTEP’s Jeane Horton. UCF went on a 5-0 run to end the set.

With momentum on its side, UCF pounded 17 kills in the second stanza and hit a .387 percentage to best the Miners. The Knights closed out the match hitting .281 in the third set to close UTEP’s home campaign.
