Golden Gloves Begins

KTSM
Sports

POSTED: Friday, January 17, 2014 - 11:46pm

UPDATED: Friday, January 17, 2014 - 11:53pm

For 72 years they have been lacing up the gloves and competing.  Golden Gloves competition began Friday at the County Coliseum.

The bouts usually take place in February but there was a scheduling conflict at the Coliseum so Golden Gloves has an early January date.  One thing that has not changed is the intensity of the bouts.

Abi Han was a contestant before turning professional and the El Pasoan still remembers the experience.

"Me and my sister, we used the Golden Gloves to help us pay for college.  So, to me, it's still one of the biggest things not only that but also it teaches you about discipline and respect."

There will be bouts in three different divisions: Junior Olympics, Novice and Open.
