Gilbreath Selected as Preseason Pick; NM State Eighth in Coaches and Ninth in Media Polls

The Western Athletic Conference (WAC) coaches and media picked the New Mexico State women's basketball team to finish eighth and ninth in their respective preseason polls, as senior guard Stefanie Gilbreath was named an All-WAC preseason pick.

The Aggies were picked sixth in last season's preseason polls. NM State finished 6-24 overall and 3-11 in the conference to place in eighth.

In the media poll, Utah State received eight first-place votes, earning 165 points. Louisiana Tech was picked to finish second with 136 points and four first-place votes, just ahead of Denver with 128 points and one first-place vote. Seattle U was picked to finish fourth with 106 points and two first-place votes, followed by Texas State with 101 points and one first-place vote. Idaho was picked to finish in sixth place with 83 points, followed by San Jose State in seventh with 64 points. UTSA (56), New Mexico State (54) and UT Arlington round out the poll.

Reigning first team All-WAC honoree Christensen was voted Preseason Player of the Year and is the on the preseason All-WAC first team. Joining her on the first team are Alyssa Charlston of Idaho, Louisiana Tech’s Whitney Frazier, Diamond Ford of Texas State and Seattle U’s Kacie Sowell.

The Preseason All-WAC second team is comprised of San Jose State’s Ta’Rea Cunnigan, Gilbreath of New Mexico State, Idaho’s Krissy Karr, Kelia Shelton of Louisiana Tech and Denver’s Emiko Smith.

Utah State received 78 points and seven first-place votes to beat out Louisiana Tech for the top spot. The Lady Techsters captured second place with 75 points and the other three first-place votes. Denver came in third with 55 points, while Seattle U finished fourth with 48 points, just ahead of Idaho in fifth place with 47 points. Texas State came in sixth with 41 points, followed by San Jose State in seventh with 36 points. New Mexico State (27), UTSA (26) and UT Arlington (17) rounded out the poll.

Christensen, a first team All-WAC pick a year ago, leads the list of Preseason All-WAC honorees. Joining her on the first team are Idaho’s Alyssa Charlston, Diamond Ford of Texas State, Louisiana Tech’s Whitney Frazier and Kacie Sowell of Seattle U.

Second team selections include Ta’Rea Cunnigan (San Jose State), Krissy Karr (Idaho), Quincey Noonan (Denver), Emiko Smith (Denver) and Ashley Ward (Seattle U).

The Aggies open the season with an exhibition game on Nov. 2 against Fort Lewis in the Pan American Center at 6:30 p.m.
