Garrett Leading Candidate to become Head Coach of Cowboys?

Sports
Monday, January 3, 2011 - 7:33pm

Garrett, the Cowboys' interim head coach for the last eight games, thanked the players for their efforts during the final team meeting and encouraged them to watch the upcoming playoffs as a source of motivation for next season. He and the coaching staff also conducted the players' annual exit interviews.

Basically, business as usual until he's told otherwise.

"Maybe this not the right time for me to evaluate myself publically," Garrett said during a 20-minute post-finale press conference. "Today is about meeting with the players and going through that process and starting the evaluation process and that's for other people to decide. We'll keep doing our job until those opportunities arise."

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has said he wants to name a permanent coach "real quickly," preferably by the end of this week, and would begin the process in earnest immediately after Sunday's finale against the Eagles.

Although Garrett is widely considered a leading candidate, Jones said Sunday night he had not made a decision or interviewed any candidates. He said he did not deem it necessary to have a formal interview with Garrett, and Garrett said Monday no meeting had been scheduled.

Jones has said he planned to speak with wide receivers coach Ray Sherman, and has not ruled out other interviews. At minimum, teams are required to interview at least one minority candidate as part of the Rooney Rule.

Garrett himself has interviewed for five other head coaching vacancies after the 2007 and 2008 seasons. Asked if he would do so if approached this year, he said, "We'll just let that whole situation unfold."
