Jefferson High School's Yvonne Galindo won the 138-pound division of the USA Wrestling Folkstyle Junior Nationals this weekend in Oklahoma, earning El Paso's first girls National Championship in city history. Galindo, a Junior at Jefferson, won the 138-pound state championship just a month ago, the first in school history, now Yvonne's trophy case is getting even bigger. Yvonne was one of 18 El Paso female wrestlers to advance to Nationals. 11 were named All-Americans, with Montwood's Natalie Honojos earning a silver medal in the 148-pound division.
"We bonded so well, we all came together as a real team, and it was team El Paso, we called ourselves. They were really nice and we got along so well, it really helped me feel comfortable, because I felt like it was my own team with them", said Yvonne. Daniel Alarcon is the head coach of Jefferson, and loved the camraderie between the girls. "Yeah, we took a group of girls, and if I remember right, we had 11 all-americans, so El Paso girls have really stepped up, we showed the national teams out there what we got here, it was awesome."
