Jenzel Nash poured in a career-high 25 points, and UTEP got three stops in the final 45 seconds on the way to handing Tulane its first home loss of the season, 65-64, in overtime inside Fogelman Arena Sunday afternoon.

The Miners (15-2, 4-0 Conference USA), who closed regulation on a 12-3 run to force OT, scored the first four points of the extra session to grab their first lead of the game (60-56, 3:30 to play). The advantage remained four with 2:34 left before Tulane’s Olivia Grayson-who had a team-high 18 points- nailed consecutive three pointers to fuel a 6-1 run and put the Green Wave (12-5, 1-3 C-USA) in front by one (64-63, 1:31 remaining).

The visitors had an answer, which fittingly came in the form of Nash. The freshman banked home a jump shot from the top of the key, propelling the Miners back into the lead with 1:11 to play. Tulane had three separate chances to move back ahead, but it couldn’t convert on any of the shots thanks to some tight marking by the Orange and Blue.

The Miners are off to a program-best 5-1 start on the road, including 2-0 in C-USA action. Tulane, which had won 10 in a row at home dating to last season, is now 8-1 on the year inside Fogelman arena.

“It’s a great win against a well-coached good team,” UTEP head coach Keitha Adams said. “We didn’t play particularly well and had too many turnovers, but we got it done at the end.”

Gloria Brown and Kayla Thornton buoyed Nash with 13 points each, with both making big plays at critical junctures. Thornton nailed her first three pointer of the season and second of her career to trim what had once been a 12-point deficit down to one (55-54).

The sophomore then blocked a lay-up attempt by Grayson, and Brown was fouled while grabbing the ensuing rebound. The senior calmly sank both free throws to pull her squad even (56-56) for the initial time of the tilt. Grayson missed a lay-up with three seconds left, with Kristine Vitola forcing her to alter her shot, which ensured OT.

The Miners finished at 33.3 percent (21-of-63) from the floor, but hit all four field goals in OT while also going 21-of-28 at the free-throw line and winning the rebounding battle, 45-39.

It marks UTEP’s first road victory in 42 games when falling shy of 34 percent from the floor, a streak which dated to the 1996-97 season.

Kelli Willingham dished out seven of the 12 assists for UTEP, which overcame some early turnover issues to get baskets when it mattered most.

Tulane didn’t fare much better with a readout of 36.4 percent from the floor (20-of-55), including just 30.4 percent (7-of-23) in the second stanza. While the Miners committed 26 turnovers, they made up for it by forcing the Green Wave into 28 giveaways. Nash led the way with seven steals, which ranks tied as the sixth-highest single-game sum in program history.

UTEP won most of the specialty categories, with 19-16 edge in points off turnovers, 10-4 on second chance, 14-2 of fast break and 47-14 from the bench.

Tulane jumped out to a 6-0 lead, and was up by 12 (29-17) with 3:34 to play in the first half. UTEP regrouped and ran off eight straight points to climb within four (29-25) at the break.

Thornton made it a two-point tilt (29-27) with a lay-up on UTEP’s first possession of the second half, but the Green Wave used an 8-2 surge to re-instate a comfortable cushion. The Miners continued to play hard, whittling the deficit down to four on a pair of occasions.

Each time Tulane had an answer, though, and the Miners trailed by nine (53-44) with 4:06 to go. UTEP held the Green Wave to just one field goal down the stretch to give itself a chance to rally. It did just that with the aforementioned 12-3 run, with Willingham and Thornton each making clutch triples.

The Miners will be back in action when they play at East Carolina at 5 p.m. MST on Wednesday.
