Completing an unusual swap of offensive coordinators, the Atlanta Falcons hired Dirk Koetter from Jacksonville to replace Mike Mularkey only four days after the Jaguars introduced Mularkey as their new coach.

Koetter was the offensive coordinator quarterbacks coach at UTEP from 1986-1988 under current athletic director Bob Stull. Koetter had been with Jacksonville since 2007 after holding head coaching jobs at Arizona State and Boise State.

This past season with the Jaguars, Koetter's offense ranked last in the league in total offense and yards passing. His offense ranked 29th with its average of 15.2 points per game.

He worked with Falcons coach Mike Smith for one year. Smith was the Jaguars' defensive coordinator before he became Atlanta's head coach in 2008.
