Long time NFL linebacker Junior Seau was found dead inside his Southern California home today.

Police say they responded to an emergency call from Seau's girlfriend this morning and found Seau dead in a bedroom from an apparent suicide.

A handgun was found near his body and police believe this was likely the result of a suicide.

Seau played for 20 seasons in the NFL. Thirteen with the San Diego Chargers, 3 with the Dolphins and 4 with the New England Patriots.

He played in 12 Pro-Bowls and was selected as a first-team all pro 6 times.

Seau retired in 2009.

Today in Oceanside a crowd quickly gathered outside his home after hearing the news.

His mother was very emotional as he spoke to the media.

"Show your love to my son. Where's Junior... Junior never do nothing to you guys. But I say today, thank you. I appreciate you guys show your love to my son," said Luisa Seau. "I don't understand who do this to my son. But I pray to God, please take me leave my son. Leave my son. But it's too late. It's too late."

Oceanside Police Chief Frank McCoy also addressed the media.

"This morning at approximately 9:35 hours our police department received a call from a young lady who indicated that she was Junior Seau's girlfriend. She returned to the residence to find Mr. Seau unconscious, suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. Oceanside Police Department and Fire Department responded to the residence where we located Mr. Seau in one of the bedrooms. Life saving efforts were performed on Mr. Seau, but they were not successful. At this point Mr. Seau has deceased. This case at this point is being investigated as a suicide. A handgun was found near the body. As you can see this is still a very fluid situation and our investigators are continuing their investigation into this matter."

Seau finished his NFL career with the Patriots and retired in 2009. He was 43 years old.
