Former Miners Perform Well in Olympic Tuneup Event

Former Miner Blessing Okagbare post personal-best at the 2012 Herculis hosted by the Samsung Diamond League in Monaco on Friday.

Okagbare claimed gold for Nigeria in the women’s 100m dash with a personal-best of 10.96. Okagbare defeated Tianna Madison (10.99) and Jeneba Tarmoh (11.09) from team USA.

On the men’s side, Churandy Martina took the track in the men’s 200m going up against a competitive field comprised of Wallace Spearmon (USA), Calesio Newman (USA), Marvin Anderson (Jamaica) and Maurice Mitchell (USA). Martina crossed the finish line second with a time of 20.07. Nickel Ashmeade from Jamaica finished first with a time of 20.02.

Wrapping up the day of competition was Mickael Hanany in the men’s high jump. The former Miner represented France on the field and finished ninth with a mark of 2.22m.

The trio will be competition in the 2012 Summer Olympics set to begin Friday, Aug. 3 in London.
