Former Mayfield Trojan to play for USA vs Belize in Gold Cup
Portland, OR — The quest for the fifth Gold Cup title for the United States begins July 9 when the team opens Group C action against Belize. Kickoff for the first ever international meeting between the teams is set for 8 p.m. PT, and the match will be broadcast live on FOX Soccer and Univision. Fans can follow the match live on ussoccer.com's MatchTracker and via Twitter @ussoccer. Former Mayfield Trojan Edgar Castillo will play as a defender for Team USA in the Gold Cup Tournament.
Costa Rica and Cuba round out the USA's opponents in the group. With a record of 25-1-2 all-time in the group phase, the United States has proved dominant in the early part of the tournament. With the World Cup less than a year away, the mix of veterans and younger players are hoping the Gold Cup will prove to be a launching point for a spot in World Cup Qualifying and ultimately Brazil in 2014.
The U.S. heads to Portland for the fourth time in team history and the first since 1998. This is the second trip to Cascadia in less than a month, following the USA's 1-0 victory against Panama in World Cup Qualifying in front of a crowd of more than 40,000 at CenturyLink Field in Seattle.
BEASLEY NAMED GOLD CUP CAPTAIN: Klinsmann has named three-time World Cup veteran DaMarcus Beasley as the U.S. captain for the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup. Beasley has enjoyed a resurgence with the National Team after receiving his first call-up in seven months when he was added to the roster for the World Cup Qualifiers in March against Costa Rica and Mexico. "His leadership and experience will be very valuable in this tournament, and he can help connect some of the younger players to what we have been building," said U.S. Men's National Team head coach Jurgen Klinsmann.
