El Paso Speedway Park opened July 4, 1979. It was built by owner/operator Willie Nunez and he did not ask the city or the county for any monetary assistance to do so. He prepared a business plan, presented it to some banks and was loaned the money to build the facility. He had help from family and friends to build it. The racers that have raced at the Park are many but a few stand out, Al Unser Jr, Bobby Unser Jr., Tom Bigelow, Steve Kinser, Sammy Swindell, Donny Schatz just to name a few.
