El Paso Raiders to play for Semi-Pro Championship
El Paso, TX — The New Mexico Wolfpack upset the 3-time defending champion New Mexico Titans, 24-20, to advance the 14th Annual NMPFL Zia Bowl Championship Game.
It was the first loss ever suffered by the Titans since joining the NMPFL in 2011.
‘The Pack’ came into the game huge underdogs after having just lost to the Titans three weeks prior, 34-6. With only 25 players suited up on their sideline, ‘The Pack’ seemed to be in for another long afternoon. But these men left everything they had on the field to defeat a proven champion.
Congratulations to ‘The Pack’!
In the south, the El Paso Raiders faced off with their cross town rival, the Sun City Reapers, for the pride of El Paso and a trip to the Zia Bowl.
This has been a bitter rivalry since the Reapers joined the league last season. The Reapers kept it close going into the half down only, 13-6. The second half proved to be a different story with the Raiders shutting out the Reapers and adding two more touchdowns en route to a 27-13 victory.
This year will mark the first time that a team from Texas has been in the NMPFL Championship Game. The Raiders and Wolfpack have met twice before, with both teams having won one game against the other.. The last meeting between the two was back in week 3 of this season, a 27-12 Wolfpack victory.
The Zia Bowl-XIV is scheduled for June 1st at 2:00 o’clock pm at Belen High School Stadium. Gates will open at 12noon, tickets are $5.00 at the gate.
