Former Bulldog returns to El Paso with the 51's

KTSM
El Paso Chihuahuas
Thursday, May 15, 2014 - 8:25pm

Omar Quintanilla is back in El Paso, this time not just to see his family, but to play some baseball.  Earlier this week, the New York Mets optioned Quintanilla to Las Vegas, where he is now playing shortstop with the 51's, the El Paso Chihuahuas opponent this weekend.

This is not the first time Quintanilla has played in El Paso in affiliated baseball.  in 2004, he played with Midland in Cohen Stadium against the El Paso Diablos.

He has a long history of Major League baseball experience, having played for the Colorado Rockies (2005–2009), Texas Rangers (2011), New York Mets (2012, 2013-2014) and Baltimore Orioles (2012).

Quintanilla attended Socorro High School in El Paso, Texas, where he led the city of El Paso in home runs, RBI, and was elected to the Texas All-State shortstop. After graduating, he received a scholarship to the University of Texas, Austin, where he played for the Texas Longhorns baseball team. Quintanilla played second base, third base, and shortstop, and appeared in two national championship games, winning one.

Quintanilla was drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the first round (33rd overall) of the 2003 Major League Baseball Draft.
