Crews begin installation of baseball stadium lights, field

As opening day at the new downtown ballpark draws closer, work crews are now beginning two of the most important elements of the ballpark.

Crews are beginning to place tons of gravel and sand on the field which will accommodate drainage of the field. The gravel will be four inches thick and then ten inches of soil will be places on top of the gravel in order for the Bermuda grass that was grown outside of San Antonio to be installed.

Crews have already completed the installation of 142 light fixtures above the ballpark. The lights are mounted 110 feet above the field on three separate towers and four poles. The lighting uses a combination of MZ and quartz type bulbs. City engineers say the light system is similar to the type installed at Major League Baseball facilities.

Ballpark contractors will test the lights in coordination with Chihuahuas team representatives to make sure that the entire field is properly illuminated and that only a minimal amount of light spills out of the ballpark into neighboring homes and businesses.

When the baseball stadium is complete, the City of El Paso will own the 7,500 seat ballpark, which will be home to the El Paso Chihuahuas.
