Dirk Nowitzki will play in game two of the NBA Finals with a torn tendon in his left middle finger, that's for sure. What is not sure is how effective Dirk will be. The injury, suffered Tuesday in Game 1 of the NBA Finals, is on his nonshooting hand, but the worry is if he can catch passes while wearing a splint to protect the torn tendon. That is the question when the Mavericks face the Miami Heat Thursday in Game 2.
"I don't think it's going to be necessarily bothering me on the shot," Nowitzki said before Wednesday's practice at AmericanAirlines Arena. "Obviously on the shot you only hold the ball with the left hand. It's not like you do anything crazy with it. It's going to be other stuff, dribbling, passing, catching, swiping down, stuff like that. I think it will be OK."
"I ran over to the sideline and showed our trainer," Nowitzki said. "He knew right away what happened. We just taped it and went from there. So it didn't affect me afterward. It didn't get as sore as I was anticipating last night. So it should be all right."
"At this point, you have to kind of deal with the hand that's dealt to you," Mavericks Coach Rick Carlisle said. "I think he'll be OK. But right now we have to keep playing."
