Diablos Fireworks on 4th, Win 24-21 with Walk-Off HR

Sports

POSTED: Monday, July 5, 2010 - 1:35am

UPDATED: Saturday, September 18, 2010 - 3:22pm

The fans wanted fireworks and that's exactly what they got, during and after the game. A sold-out crowd roared as Kyle Nichols put a punctuation mark at the end of the first half of the season with a three-run walk-off homer to seal a 24-21 victory for the El Paso Diablos.

At one point, El Paso led division champ Shreveport 16-5, but the Captains came back to tie the game and took a one-run lead in the top of the 9th. It was small-ball that got the Diablos the tie in the bottom of the 9th, but it was a blast over the centerfield wall that won the game as Kyle Nichols got the fireworks started early with a three-run homer to win the game.

Nichols was the biggest bat of the night, getting on base on every appearance going 3-5 with 2 walks, 6 RBI's, and two runs scored. Hector Bernal got five hits, going 5-7 with 3 RBI's and 4 runs scored.

The 24 runs scored was two shy of club record. Shreveport outhit El Paso 28-25.

The Diablos begin the 2nd half of the season on Tuesday at Fort Worth. They won't return home until Friday, July 16th when they host the St. Paul Saints.
