Del Valle High School soccer coach Bruce Reichman is taking his team to the Sweet Sixteen regional soccer tournament this weekend, for the seventh time. The Conquistadores and their coaches are focused on getting the two wins they need to make a fifth trip to the Final Four and to bring back a third state championship title. As their quest for a third state title progresses, Coach Reichman has also quietly closed in on his 500th win as a coach. He is one game away from becoming the 39th boys' soccer coach in the United States to ever reach that milestone.
A victory on Friday not only puts them into the "elite eight" but catapults Reichman into the "500 win club." Significantly, every victory has been earned while a coach at Del Valle. Reichman is a charter faculty member and with 27 years of service, he is the only men’s soccer coach in the history of the school.
Coach Reichman has earned numerous honors at Del Valle including Who's Who of American Teachers and the El Paso Times Coach of the Year in 1992, 1998, 1999, 2004, 2005, and 2008. He was also the 2008 National Federation of High Schools State Coach of the Year and Sectional Coach of the Year alongside the 2008 UIL Texas State Coach of the Year. He was inducted in to the El Paso Athletic Hall of fame in 2009.
Reichman ranks third in the State of Texas amongst active coaches with the most wins and he ranks first all-time in the City of El Paso with 499 career wins which include; 65 championship titles: 15 – District Championship Titles, 8 - Bi-District Championship Titles, 13 – Area Championship Titles, 7 – Sectional Championship Titles, 8 – Quarter Final Championship Titles, 6 – Sweet 16 Championship Titles, 4 – Elite 8 Championship Titles, 4 – Final Four Appearances, and 2 – State Championships.
Reichman and his Conquistadores face Crowley High School on Friday, at noon central time in the Wichita Falls Memorial Stadium. The winner of that matchup goes on to face the winner of San Elizario v Rider. That game, too, will be played at noon in Wichita Falls.
