After months of waiting, NFL football is officially back as the Dallas Cowboys defeated the Miami Dolphins 24-20 in the Hall of Fame game.

Both teams sat out key players as a precaution as they start their 2013 campaign.

Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo dressed but did not play as he recovers from off season back surgery.

Although Romo wanted to start the decision was made to start Kyle Orton instead.

It was a close game as players fighting for roster spots took the majority of the snaps.

It was also the debut of the new Tampa 2 defense for the Cowboys and new defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin. Head coach Jason Garrett came away impressed after the defense recorded two turnovers including a 75 yard pick-six by rookie Devonte Holloman that gave Dallas a 17-3 halftime lead.

"Obviously, made the takeaway early on. I think it might have been a quarterback and running back exchange issue, but we were there, we were around the football and made the play there. Then Holloman's interception was positive," said Garrett. "The correlation between taking the ball away and scoring points in this league is huge. And then scoring points when you have more than they do, you're going to win a lot of games. It's and obvious connection and when we've played our best around here is when we've taken the ball away and protected it and it reflects on the scoreboard and helps us win ball games."

Romo was also impressed with his team in the preseason opener.

"We're doing everything we can right now and I'm really excited about how this training camp has gone. It's really... really pretty good," said Romo.

It was also the first game Garrett was not calling plays and Owner Jerry Jones thought the offense looked diverse.

"We're doing some play-action. I like our formations. I like the fact that we got those tight ends in there and we're probably giving our blockers a better chance than some of the things we were doing last year," said Jones.

The Cowboys next pre-season game will be on Friday at Oakland against the Raiders.
