Cowboys fine QB Orton $70K for no-show

KTSM
Dallas Cowboys

POSTED: Thursday, June 19, 2014 - 6:56pm

UPDATED: Friday, June 20, 2014 - 10:54am

The Dallas Cowboys concluded mandatory three-day minicamp Thursday at AT&T Stadium. Quarterback Kyle Orton was a no-show, so the Cowboys rolled with backups Brandon Weeden, Caleb Hanie and Dustin Vaughan. Tony Romo was held out team drills as he recovers from back surgery he had in December.

For skipping minicamp, Orton will face a fine of up to $69,455. Orton had voiced that he wanted to retire but if he does, he will have to repay the Cowboys his $3.4M signing bonus. Conversely, the team does not want to cut him because they still want him to back up Romo and would lose all of the signing bonus.

"This is mandatory for him to be here and the consequences have been pre-negotiated when we did our contract. We have, the organization has, visited with his representation and so we'll just kind of let it play out from there," said team owner Jerry Jones.

There are additional fines Orton could be billed if he does not show up for training camp July 23 in Oxnard California.

"We anticipate him being at training camp," coach Jason Garrett said. "Communication is a big part of that situation, trying to understand why he wasn't here and taking the necessary work. ... What we have to do and need to do as an organization is penalize him the necessary amounts of fines and those kinds of things. We also just want to understand and communicate and try to figure out [how] this situation is going to play out that's best for the Dallas Cowboys and for Kyle Orton."
