Cowboys owner Jerry Jones reiterated Sunday that he doesn't believe in making in-season coaching changes. Phillips, in turn, feels badly that the team hasn't met his support with better results.
"I don't worry about losing him. I worry about losing for him," Phillips said. "I feel bad for him because I think we should have been doing better. The guy does everything I think is possible to try to win and have a winner.
"He's an excellent general manager. He's gotten us good players. I think the drafts have been good. We've probably got the best rookie in the league this year out of the draft (Dez Bryant) with a team that won a playoff game last year. That's just the way it is."
Several players have publicly defended Phillips since Sunday's loss, stating that execution simply needs improvement.
"I hate it for Wade because his job is so hard now," linebacker Bradie James said. "One thing I can truly say is he's been positive and consistent as far as he approaches the team meetings and us, altogether. He's the head coach, so everybody knows we look to him for answers. It's just tough, man; nobody really has them right now.
