Countess Curlin exudes class in $50,000 Island Fashion Stakes
Countess Curlin exuded class with a confident 4-length win in the $50,000 Island Fashion Stakes at Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino on Sunday. The classy three-year-old Curlin filly won her third straight and might run next in the $200,000 Sunland Park Oaks to be run on Sunday, March 24.
Overcoming the extremely windy conditions, Countess Curlin bided her time in sixth place while under a cool ride from jockey Luis Contreras during the early stages of the one mile feature. Racing as the even money favorite, Countess Curlin remained well off the pace racing down the backstretch. Contreras waited for opening and found one while racing into the upper stretch. The responsive filly shot through the hole and raced past the pace setting Shesatopattraction.
Countess Curlin showed great acceleration in the final furlong and won stylishly under a hand ride. The promising star earned $30,000 for the Stonestreet Stables, LLC of Lexington, Kentucky. The route loving chestnut has 3 wins a 1 second from 4 career starts. Her previous 2 wins came at Retama Park and Sam Houston Race Park. Asmussen had her ready for a big effort on Sunday. She paid $4.20 on a $2 win ticket. The winning time was 1:39.68.
Asmussen is the third leading trainer of all-time with over 6,380 career wins. The training wizard is only 47-years-old.
Shesatopattraction ran a brave race for trainer Henry Dominguez and finished second after leading for much of the way. The 16-1 long shot outran her odds and fought grudgingly after setting the pace through a terrific headwind. Infinitely wound up in third, beaten nearly 5 lengths. She completed a $1 trifecta worth $194.30.
Fraudulentfootnote, Challenging, Lady of Luck and Derby Hat rounded out the order of finish.
Live racing resumes on Tuesday at 1 p.m.
