Cardinals Win National League Pennant

The St. Louis Cardinals, a team that was 10 1/2 game out of the wild card race on August 24th, is headed to its 18th World Series.  The Cardinals defeated Milwaukee 12-6 to win the National League pennant closing out the series 4-2 at Miller Park.

It was a slug fest as the teams combined to hit six home runs in the first three innings.  The Brewers and Cardinals combined to use 13 pitchers. 

St. Louis took a 4-0 lead in the top of the 1st but Milwaukee immediately answered and it was a 5-4 game in the thrid when Albert Pujols connected on a lead off homer.  The Cardinals went on to score 3 more runs that inning and were never challenged.

David Freese, who hit a 3 run homer in the first, was the series MVP.

The World Series between Texas and St. Louis starts Wednesday at Busch Stadium with the Cardinals having the home field advantage by virtue of the Naational League's win in the All Star Game.
