A great year got a little better Wednesday for Burges Senior Danny Tarango. The track star capped off a year in which he won two state gold medals and was named 1-4A Male Athlete of the Year by the El Paso Hall of Fame with signing a Division 1 scholarship to his hometown UTEP.

In May at the UIL State Track and Field Championships in Austin, Tarango won the 800 meter run gold medal, then won the 1600 meter relay along with Monderrio Turner, Aaron Jones, and Xavier Matthews. Tarango turned down multiple offers from other univerisities including Texas A&M in favor of the Miners saying it was what he wanted.

"I want to stay home with my family. I knew I was going to need their support, either in athletics or in school so I'm really glad I'm staying here," said Tarango.

He added that he hopes to study either criminal justice or education while at UTEP.
