UTEP senior running back Donald Buckram has been named one of 30 players on the watch list for the Walter Camp Football Foundation’s 2010 Player of the Year Award. Buckram is the first player in UTEP history to be listed as a preseason candidate for the prestigious honor.

The list reads like a “Who’s Who” in college football and includes reigning Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram from Alabama. Buckram and Ingram are two of the 10 running backs on the watch list, along with Wisconsin’s John Clay, West Virginia’s Noel Devine, Oregon’s LaMichael James, Pittsburgh’s Dion Lewis, Temple’s Bernard Pierce, Oregon State’s Jacquizz Rodgers, Penn State’s Evan Royster and Virginia Tech’s Ryan Williams.

Buckram and Houston’s record-setting quarterback Case Keenum are the only players from Conference USA to make the cut.

The watch list will be narrowed to 10 semifinalists in early November. The 2010 Walter Camp Player of the Year recipient, which is voted on by the 120 NCAA Bowl Subdivision head coaches and sports information directors, will be announced live on ESPN SportsCenter on Thursday, December 9. The winner will then receive his trophy at the Foundation’s annual national awards banquet on January 15, 2011 at the Yale University Commons in New Haven.

Buckram ran for 1,594 yards in 2009 to break a UTEP single-season rushing record that had stood for 61 years. He ranked third nationally in scoring (10.5 ppg), fourth in rushing yards per game (132.8) and 11th in all-purpose yards per game (170.6). Buckram had eight 100-yard games last season and enters his senior year as the Miners’ no. 9 all-time leading rusher with 2,082 yards.
