Brown & Thornton Earn All-Conference USA Honors

Sports

POSTED: Sunday, March 4, 2012 - 6:44pm

UPDATED: Sunday, March 4, 2012 - 11:38pm

UTEP’s Gloria Brown (first team) and Kayla Thornton (second team) were recognized as All-Conference USA performers, the league office announced Sunday. Brown, who was a second-team honoree in 2011, also landed on the five-member all-defensive squad.

Brown joins former standout Jareica Hughes as the lone individuals in program history to secure both first team and all-defensive team accolades in the same season.

It is the first time since 2007-08 (Hughes, Natasha Lacy & Izabela Piekarska) that UTEP placed multiple players on the all-league team. Overall the Miners have now been represented on the all-conference squad for six straight years.

Brown has been a dominant player on both ends of the court, who rates among the league leaders for blocked shots (2.9-first), field-goal percentage (52.1-third), free-throw percentage (79.2- third), offensive rebounds per game (3.2-fourth), rebounding (8.8-fifth), defensive rebounds (5.6-seventh) & scoring (11.5-15th).

She also leads the Miners in double-doubles (10), free-throws made (80 and attempted 101. She has done all of this thins in 19.7 minutes per game off the pine while regularly facing double or even triples teams.

Thornton has had a breakout sophomore season, and was a key player for the Miners’ drive to the 2012 C-USA regular-season crown. She has filled up the stat sheet and checks in among the league’s leaders on field-goal percentage (48.8-sixth), offensive rebounding (3.1-7th), free-throw percentage (74.0-eighth), rebounds per game (7.1-11th), defensive rebounds per game (4.0-12th) and scoring (9.8-23rd).

She is second on the team for double-digit scoring games (12) and double-doubles (three), in addition to field-goal percentage (48.4), minutes per game (24.5) and steals (33).

Brown, Thornton and the rest of the Miners are getting some well-deserved rest before turning their attention to the 2012 C-USA Championships (March 7-10), where they will be the top seed at the event. UTEP will square off against the victor of (8) UCF vs. (9) Southern Miss in a quarterfinals contest at 4 p.m. MST on Thursday, March. 8
